how to study the bible

I enjoyed reading the book, “Misquoting jesus” and really got a lot out of it. The author doesn’t seem to state things that he hasn’t researched and this creates a lot of problems for christian believers. Most Christians were taught to believe things about Jesus and christianity, but rarely seem to seek any sort of verification for this type of teaching.

You can take the bible’s word for it, pretend that the Bible is the written word of God or even that the Bible was inspired by God but written by man, but the truth is, there isn’t enough evidence to support some of the major claims written with in the Bible.

The resurrection and birth of jesus are great examples of eyewitness testimonies written down in a book, by people who weren’t even there. These authors are gathering their stories from people that were actually at these events, but there isn’t any historical evidence to support these claims.

In other words, it goes something like this; your great-grandfather inherits $1 million from his father and spends all of the money. He doesn’t have anything to show for it, but he has spent most of his life telling your relatives, that this actually happened.

You write this down in your family journal and never even question the story. It makes sense to you and everyone in your family often talks about the money that you’re great grandfather wasted. It dons on you one day that this might not have ever happened.

You start to do a little research and find out that there isn’t any proof that your great-grandfather ever received this money or spent it. You can’t find any eyewitnesses to support his claims and everything that you hear is now considered hearsay.

This is kind of what happened in the Bible. I could try to convince you that some of the stuff written in the Bible is hearsay and that there are some major contradictions within it, but I would rather you, as an intelligent person, find out for yourself. Do a little bit of research on early Christianity and the pieces of the puzzle will start to fall in place.

Most of the time, hearsay is not accepted as evidence in a court of law, but to Christians they seem to accept it most of the time without question.
